EDUCATION IN BRITAIN
British children start school when they are five. Some of them can already read and write when they start school, particularly if they have attended play school.
Compulsory education lasts until they are sixteen. At the age of sixteen about half of the pupils leave school, and they look for a job.

The other half stay on at school until the age of eighteen, preparing themselves for University.
The teaching day is generally divided into seven periods of forty-five minutes each, and these include periods for sports on the playing fields.

The school year is divided into three terms. The autumn term starts the first week in September and ends before Christmas, the second term begins in January and ends by mid-April. The summer terms begins at the beginning of May and ends by mid-July.
Most pupils wear a school uniform.

Classes have their own classroom, but there are also classrooms for individual subjects: The Science Room, the Language Room, the Information Technology (Computer) Room, and so on.
Students can choose to study the subjects they like best, and their teachers encourage them to do so.

Some schools have mixed ability classes, where the brilliant and the less clever students work together. In other schools student work in groups according to their ability in different subjects: this way a student who is very good at English, but not so good at French can work at English with one group and at French with another group.
