Oggi vi propongo la lettura e l’ascolto di un brano riguardante l’Irlanda ( Ireland ), grande isola situata ad ovest della Gran Bretagna. Solo una piccola parte dell’Irlanda, il Northern Ireland, insieme al Galles, l’Inghilterra e la Scozia, fa parte del Regno Unito (United Kingdom). Gran parte dell’Irlanda è, infatti, indipendente ed è chiamata Republic of Ireland (Repubblica Irlandese).

Ireland is a big island west of Great Britain. It is called the “Emerald Isle” because it is a green, hilly country. The climate is mild and rainy, so it is mainly a farming country.
Irish people speak English, but they also have their own Gaelic culture, traditions and language.
Ireland was a poor country, so Irish people often emigrates to the other parts of the world, mainly to the USA, Canada and Australia. From a political point of view, Ireland is divided into two parts, Eire and Ulster. Eire is an independent Republic, while Ulster is a part of the United Kingdom.

Ireland has a rich musical tradition. The Irish love singing, dancing and playing music. In pubs you can still listen to traditional instruments and music, but Ireland has also produced famous rock singer and groups, like U2, the Corrs, and more recently, Roman Keating.

THE TROUBLES
“The troubles” stands for the political-religious conflict between the two groups who live side by side in Northern Ireland, but have different traditions and different religions. The majority of the people are Protestants and Unionists. They are the descendants of the English and Scottish people who arrived in England in the 16th century. They feel British and they want to stay in the United Kingdom.
About 40% of the people are Catholics and Nationalists. They are the descendants of the original Irish population who remained Catholic when England became Protestant. They feel Irish and they would like to create a single, independent Republic, with Eire and Ulster united.

There is a long history of conflict between the two communities, especially in Belfast, the capital of Ulster, where the two religious groups live in segregated areas. The big problem is to find a compromise, so that the Unionists and Nationalists can live together without fighting.
